River Guide : Carsten Stuhr
Carsten Stuhr, a kayak instructor at Rendezvous River Sports and guide at Black Dog
Raft Company, has been a river guide for 13 years, with nine of those years in Jackson. He
could probably tackle the whitewater or float the scenic part of the Snake River with his eyes
closed because of the numerous trips he’s taken as a former Dave Hansen Whitewater head boatman. But don’t worry, he doesn’t.
“I like getting people into a boat and then bringing them into the mentality of it,” he explained.
“I’m always trying to show them the fun aspects of the river and not just survival down the river.” Stuhr wants all of his guests to play in the river, have a good time and fall in love with the sport.
Originally from Alabama, Stuhr first came out to Jackson on a church mission trip when he was 17 and that’s when he became enamored with the West. After guiding in Utah and California, he moved to Jackson in the summer of 2005 to get more into river kayaking.
Now, one of the most rewarding parts of his job is working with students as a part of the Jackson Hole Kayak Club. “I like to get those kids into the whitewater and really get them hooked,” he said. His students affectionately call him “Wookie” because of his dark blonde-striped beard and tall stature, according to Stuhr.
When he’s not guiding in Jackson, Stuhr is in West Virginia guiding the Gauley River for Class VI River Runners. He also spent two summers guiding in California on a “mid-career hiatus to explore new water.” The Snake River at its highest can be considered a Class IV but is mostly a mellow river, according to Stuhr. “It’s a family-friendly run. It’s a good one to get first-timers out on,” Stuhr said.
